HI there,

My name's Emma and I'm from Adelaide.  I'm researching Kokoda at the moment, as my goal is to do the trek in July this year.  I'm seeking advice on the best locations to train.  Also, I'm looking for people from Adelaide who are planning to do Kokoda around the same time.  Any help would be appreciated.

Many thanks, Emma

Hi Emma

I'm surprised that you haven't had a response as yet from fellow SA's about locations around Adelaide. Whilst I personally haven't climbed anything worthwhile in SA, my recommendation is to find a walking path 500m - 1000m, which is steep and bushy and start your training there and then as you become acclimatised to that start pushing yourself a bit more. This may include you doing double climbs and by that I mean after your climb when you reach the top and descend, you then turn around and do the climb again, which will simulate your actually daily activity. The other method to get you ready will be multiple daily climbs. Prior to my two treks, I would train everydau throughout Easter, because this is what you will be doing, everyday you wake up, it is off and up a hill every day, no rest days.

I presume you will have a personal porter to carry your main pack, but it wouldn't hurt for you to also traini carrying a pack. Most main packs will weigh between 13k - 16k and day packs may weigh between 6k -10k, so if you can get used to carrying that weight before you go you will be in a much better situation when you do the actual trek.

you could have a look at the following websites for more SA info:
www.southaustraliantrails.com/trailexperiences
www.southaustraliantrails.com/40greatshortwalks
www.australiaforeveryone.com

I also have a spreadsheet of every individual item I took and it's weight, if you would like it, please let me know your email address and I'll send it to you.

Good luck and best wishes and I hope yo hear of your progress
