Was stationed in Port Moresby with the Army from 72-74 and we attended the Dawn Service at Bomana where my uncle is interred and I would have to say that it is one of the most moving dawn services that I have attended.
If you can visualise the fog swirling around the graves, the smell of the flowers on the fence lines and then the Last Post coming from behind you in the still of the morning, has a tendency to make the hairs on the back of the neck stand up.

I know I didn't trek with KTL, but for those who have, I just thought it might be a good idea for you all (even me since I consider myself part of the KTL family as a result of being on this forum for so long!) to get together for a BBQ or something at somewhere like the Botanical Gardens to talk and share about your Kokoda Experiences.
Anzac Day

Ok, so I took part in our local area's ANZAC Day march/parade (representing our local cadet unit - 127RCU). This was good. ANZAC Day is a chance not only to remember those fallen at Gallipoli etc, but those that have served in other wars & those presently serving in our Defence Force.

I obtained the Courier Mail's tribute poster of Australia's involvement in wars throughout history - past & present. I noticed Kokoda was not mentioned. This bothered me greatly and so I asked my partner why he though Kokoda wasn't included?

He suggested it might be because it was a 'chokko war' - because all of the 'real' troops were helping out o'seas in other places. I was deeply offended - not by him personally - but by the mere thought that some people might indeed be of this opinion.

These brave, galiant men were more than just soldiers. They were literally, Australia's saving grace. How is it that this is not recognised on one of our nations most pertinant days of rememberance?

fluppy

Some Questions

Just reading through the schedules, what is the difference to the 8 day one to the 9 day one, is it just a matter of timing (sleep onsite then start as opposed to flying in and starting straight away)

PNG Guide vs. Australian Guide, is the track commentary focus different (PNG = more Local information about the people/flora, Aus = More WWII info?) or is it for people who'd prefer one or the other? Or no real difference.

What's the most rewarding direction? Is it following the retreating footsteps Kokoda to Ower's or finishing up at Kokoda. If you finish at Ower's do you just jump on a truck/bus and get taken back to your hotel room? Is any direction easier?

Also is there anywhere that lists the amount of time on average it takes to do each days walking in average conditions. Are you walking like 8-10 hours each day?

Sorry for all the questions, have been reading the forums and most of my questions have been answered.

TIA

Going It Alone

For the time that I have been planning to do the trek, I was always planning on taking my old man with me.

He is far fitter then I am and also a heck of a lot tougher and I guess all my thoughts were about making this something for us.

I have just found out that there is no way that he will be able to do the trek (needs both knees reco'd essentially - after years of footy abuse) and I guess now I need to make the decision whether to do it alone.

For me, the physical side of the trek is daunting. Being overweight and trying vehemently to drop the excess weight (or at least as much as possible) and get fit (haven't been properly fit for 10 years) has been a challenge, but I guess the mental aspect of losing my 'mate' for the walk is the most scary.

It is easy for me to imagine pushing myself to keep up with the old man, but I'm just not sure how I will go alone.

I guess what I'm after is feedback from others who have trekked Kokoda alone. How much harder was it? Did you miss the companionship?

Sorry for the carry on, but this has really thrown all my plans into disarray and I'm trying to get my head around it.

Sms/text To Kokoda

Hi

I made a couple of very special mates when trekking Kokoda one and his family are very special to both my wife and I.

Whilst I have spoken by phone to my mate when he was in Moresby we have been waiting for the mobile phones to start operating in Kokoda as we all know now this has just happened.

I am not sure exactly how much it would cost us to phone a mobile in Kokoda what ever to talk for a while would not be cheap even for us just imagine how expensive it would be for those in Kokoda with their mobiles to phone you specially if they do not realise every second counts they would soon eat up their very limited funds.

My Kokoda mate and I agreed some time ago that when phones came on there that we would generally only send SMSs to each other this would reduce the expense of phone calls considerably.

We have now sent a couple either way I am unsure what it costs in Kokoda but using Skype here it is only costs 13 cents for each SMS to Kokoda.

I would suggest that other Ex Trekkers who may want to keep in touch with friends made whilst trekking consider the same as a SMS is a less expensive way for all to do so.

Brian

Does everyone have 're-entry' issues? Or is it just me?

I didn't even want to get back on the plane to come home. Kokoda was always going to be more of an emotional trial for me, rather than physical, and it was/is more so than I expected.
Trekking Group Size

The issue of Dash 8 aircraft flying into Kokoda is a bigger issue than I thought. At this stage I agree with Gail, this would not be in anyone's interest other than the likes of Charlie Lynn's organisation and their grossly oversized trekking groups.

A most sensible rule on Tasmania's Overland Track, when I last checked, was that groups must not exceed 15. I see no reason whatsoever why this should not apply to Kokoda.

Gail, I have noted your participation, with your industry, meeting with the Kokoda Track Authority from time to time. No doubt you are persuing the issue of appropriate trekking group numbers and I am certain you can count on the support of the majority of the contributors to this forum in favour of restricting numbers within groups.

I am certainly not advocating a reduction in annual overall trekking numbers other than to a maximum which the Authority deems appropriate for overall sustainability.

Cheers, Geoff Hardie

Back Safe From Kokoda

I saw the thread about the plane that went down, but haven't read it yet, because I'm on my mum's dialup account and things are taking ages to load.

I was on the flight that was initially reported (in Australia) to be missing, with Adventure Kokoda. We had two flights into Kokoda that morning due to the size of our group. The No Roads flight was between our two. Our first plane took off and couldn't land, due to the weather conditions, so came back to refuel. They took off again and landed safely. No Roads took off not long after. When we (the 2nd group of AK trekkers) took off, the weather looked ok, but we couldn't land. We stayed in the air about 90 minutes, trying to land and the pilots looking for the other plane (we didn't know at the time), then went back to PM. It wasn't till about 5.30/6pm, at our base accommodation in Sogeri, we were told people had been told it was our plane that went down, so there were lots of phone calls home to say we were ok. We had to get to Kokoda the next day by flying into Popondetta, then getting truck into Kokoda (including having to get across the Kamusi River in tractor tyre tubes!).

Those first few days were pretty tough and we had a minute silence for those lost in the crash, at Kokoda before we trekked out, and remembered them again at Isurava at our dawn service. Channel 9 flew a chopper into Isurava and we had mixed emotions about talking to them.

We certainly felt for the people of No Roads and definitely moreso when we passed them having to stretcher out a trekker who'd hurt his leg quite badly. An incredible sight to witness, but a sad run of bad luck for the company and its people.

We had to do our 11 day trek in 9 days, so it was pretty hard going the first couple of days. Experiencing below zero temperatures and ice on our tents at Myola was certainly unexpected (cold, painful night!), but we learnt quickly nothing is how you think it will be in PNG. I had the most amazing time, and apart from a sore knee the last couple of days, made it through safely...and with over 6GB of photos and video!!!

Our group is setting up a blog for photos and a youtube site for our videos and I'll share the link once people start to upload their files, for anyone who's interested.

All things going to plan, some of us will be going back next year. I most definitely will be and I'm more confident than ever now about starting my trek training business in Melbourne and I'm really excited about being able to get people physically prepared to go (as much as they can be, anyway!).

It's been a very emotional couple of weeks and I'm glad to be home, but also would have loved to stay longer.

Eve
(new user name, coz I couldn't log into my EveG account.)

Back On The Horse

When I was a teenager I was crossing a creek on a horse that panicked whilst doing so ran up the bank at the same time throwing me off, I hit my head on a bough of tree temporarily knocking me out fortunately very briefly for when I awoke I was actually sitting in the creek with water around my neck, very lucky you will agree. By that time my father seeing the horse without me came back to find me after assuring that I was okay he insisted on me getting back on the same horse which I did spending the rest of he day on it without any problems at all.

Since then like most of us I have had several "knocks" in my life some quite dramatic but the lesson learnt that day from my father has lived with me for after each "knock" I got back on my "horse" and got on with life.

In todays Sunday Mail I read that the trekking company involved it the tragic accident, even more so for them, has got back on it's "Horse". This must have been a hard decision for them to make and I am sure that those lost in the accident is one that they would like made.

I congratulate them and other trekking companies along with thier guides and porters who with all care are continuing with thier planned treks as the lively hood of so many that in some way depends on these treks taking place.

Lets hope that those who may be reconsidering trekking Kokoda get back on thier "Horse" and go ahead with thier trek.

Brian

Hi everyone,

Well my dad and I have decided to do Kokoda in May 2010 (I need the time to get fit!), and have been doing my homework for the past couple of months.

However, since talking with a customer of mine, I am now confused.

Dad and I are looking to carry our own pack (no personal porter) and I thought this would mean I would need to carry around 18kg's in the pack. I'm not so sure I'll be fit enough for carrying full pack so will make up my mind closer to date.

Talking with my customer, who has done the track, he tells me this weight is the "day pack" only and the porter will carry similar.

Surely this is incorrect? Wouldn't 18kg's be the total weight as a guide?

Thanks for clarifying this for me. I am just a little confused now.

Kokoda Pre-trek Physical Training

Hi all,

I'm not trying to sell anything - just genuinely looking for some feedback.

I'm a personal trainer and will be doing Kokoda in August. Once I come back, I intend to start training small groups specifically in preparation for doing Kokoda. I'll also be utilising the services of a friend who's also a personal trainer and is coming along with me when I train - rain, hail or shine (because nobody else will!), so she understands what's involved.

I know there are other groups that offer training, either through the trekking organisation or gyms. But for people like me who are on their own (I'm going with my dad, but he's in Qld and I'm in Vic) and don't want to join a gym, there doesn't seem to be much of a structured alternative that doesn't have some kind of catch to it, like being a member of a club, or going with a particular trekking company. This is why I want to pursue this business idea.

The other thing I've found is that I've spent a lot of time contemplating what clothing etc I want to buy, how much it's going to cost, where I'll have to buy it, and all the planning that goes along with it. And I'm just getting frustrated.

By chance, I've started working with a company that sells active (gym) wear and in July they are also bringing out a range of anti-mosquito treated products, including shirts, pants, hats, socks, sleeping bag liners etc to help protect against malaria and dengue fever . The fabric is odourless and non-irritant and each batch of material is certified. Obviously, there is still a requirement for the tablets and repellent to complement the clothing. I'll be wearing the clothing when I go in August and may become a distributor if they do all they claim.

My questions are...

Would an all-outdoor, 3 month training program be something you would consider?

Would it be beneficial to have trek clothing provided as part of a package with your training?

Would you prefer to choose to purchase the clothing separately? (A training and clothing package, or either one on its own.)

Would you prefer to train in a small group (eg one trainer and up to 6 people) or a larger group (eg two trainers and up to 12 people)? Or would you rather groups be split according to fitness levels?

Is there anything you wish you did or wish you knew in your training that would have helped you on the trek?

Any other ideas, feedback, suggestions would be great.

Thanks!
Eve

Ow! Ow! Ow! - Breaking New Boots In

Couldn't find the original topic of boots that I commented on sometime last year. Hi-Tek was my brand of choice for boots (for my size) as suggested by Gail in the thread I can't locate.

It is a nightmare trying to find good quality children's size 2 boots suitable for trekking Kokoda. But I think we did it. Is Zamberlan a good brand?

They are a 'Skill GT Dark Brown' leather type with Gore-Tex lining and Vibram soles. They were $389.95 but had a whopping 80% off as no-one was able to fit them. They must've been meant for me - because I fit them - toes, heels, sides/width of feet, pronation of feet, ankles - every which way, I seemed to fit them

We only paid $78 for them - so naturally, couldn't go past such a discount. Would you? I have been wearing them all day with the new hiking socks I will be using on Kokoda and even kept them on when I had a 30 min cat-nap.

They are not so bad when I walk around (a bit uncomfortable, but that is to be expected) but I noticed after my feet were slightly inactive while I was resting for that 30mins that they became very painful across the tops of both my feet about say, 3rd notch down from the top on the laces (I don't think I have tied them too tight).

If I flex my feet in the boots (point my toes upwards), then right across the first knuckle on my big toe hurts as it strikes the top of the boot - but this is only on my left toe. Both of my feet and my left toe are still hurting. Is this because it is my first day wearing them and the leather hasn't stretched yet or is there something wrong with my feet? How long will this last?

Do I carry my first aid kit, day snacks, loo paper, sunscreen/mozzie off, poncho, camera.... in my daypack so that i don't need to be bothering my porter throughout the day? Or can I get gear from him if need be ( such as my first aid kit)?

Also would appreciate some guidelines on the size of the daypack. Would 25 litres be big enough?

Thanks

Aeorosol Cans/tubes Of Things

Are these allowed into PNG? Thinking stuff like Aeroguard (mozzie/insect repellant). I have heard that the brand 'Bushman's' comes in a roll-on form and was wondering if it was any good. Deodorant is not a problem as I know that comes in a roll-on form. Finding an anti-perspirant roll-on is difficult though...

What about things like sunscreen & toothpaste? I don't mind not brushing my teeth for 9 days, but I'm sure others around me certainly will if I open my mouth to speak! Is toothpaste and sunscreen in tubes ok to bring? How should I pack these so they don't burst in my pack? I don't really want to use a toiletry bag as this can take up a lot of space in my pack. Wrap them up in a freezer bag/zip-lock bag?

Also, soaps. My husband and his father are often away for work, staying at many different hotels around Australia. From their travels, they have collected many small 'hotel' soaps. I figured these would be ideal to bring as;
1) they are small & compact
2) they are individually wrapped, so if you lose one, it's no big deal.
3) they save me buying soap that camping stores try to sell.

Lastly, toilet paper or packets of Wet Ones?

Any thoughts/comments would be great. Thanks.

Visa Conditions For Entry Into Png

Something on the tv show 'Border Security' here in Australia brought to my attention.

Here, in Australia, all criminal convictions must be declared before a Visa entry is granted.

Does Papua New Guinea have a similar thing in place?

I am asking because I am autistic. Before I was diagnosed with autism, I was charged (and convicted) of a number of serious assaults, resisting arrest and wilful damage.

That was roughly about 10 years ago. I have not been incarcerated (in prison) or had drug offences or murder or anything serious like that. However neither did the guy on Border Security (whom was denied his Visa) [although he did spend time in prison].

He was a bit sketchy on the details, but thought he was doing the right thing by declaring he had a criminal history.

I do not want to be in the same situation having trained and prepared for so long for this trek only to find I will not be granted a Visa for entry into PNG due to my past and/or pre-existing condition.

One of the reasons I am trekking Kokoda is to raise awareness of autism and autism-related conditions to get teenagers/young adults the funding and the help they need for treatment - so they won't have to go through what I went through and so can avoid confrontations with people in authority/having a criminal history.

Any information regarding Visa entry conditions into Papua New Guinea would be greatly appreciated and would assist me in my planning/preparation of trekking Kokoda.

Thanks all in advance

Questions And Introduction

Hello all;

My names Aaron, im 16 and come from Tasmania (please keep the two head jokes to a minimum...)

Anyway I have had a very generous offer from a family member to do the Kokoda track. I have chosen to go in 2011 (after yr 12) and will most likely going by myself. I know its a long way off, but I want to start looking into things now, and also clear a few things up as well.

I just have a few questions at the moment, and I figured this would be the best place to ask them.

I am interested in doing the actual battlefield trail with visits to points of interest along the way. eg. old barracks.

Does Kokoda Trekking have a trek including things like that? Or does it mostly cover the local villages along the way?

Also what is the maximum group size? I'm not really interested in going with a massive group, but more interested in a group under 20 people.

Is there anything else I should know in advance at the time being?

Also (and i dont want to seem rude here) but why would I choose Kokoda Trekking over another tour group?

Thanks in advance;

Aaron

Gifts For The Local Children

I know there must be a lot (hundreds possibly?) of local village children in PNG, but I'd like to give some of the children some gifts as I have seen in photos on here. Things like colouring in books/crayons, a ball of some sort, a teddy, lollies or little things like that.

How would I go about doing this? I mean, in terms of packing. Should I buy here in Australia and take them with me or is there a place in PNG that would sell that sort of stuff?

Also, are there any villages that would oppose this idea of gifts to the children - like would any villages consider it offensive?

Also, I'd like to give my porter a gift - more a token of appreciation and deep gratitude rather than a 'gift' (I've heard they're mad keen on cigarettes! and possibly playing cards or something). Again, would I be better off buying here or over there?

Thanks for your thoughts.

Death Of A Trekker

As many would have heard, a relatively young man of 39, collapsed and died on the track this week from a suspected heart attack near Denaki while trekking with Kokoda Spirit. This is a timely reminder to all would be trekkers who are thinking of attempting the track without the assistance of a registered trekking company. This is a primitive and unforgiving land, and incidents like this can happen to anyone. This was a relatively fit man, who had a doctor’s certificate of clearance. Once on the track, there are NO communications and registered trekking companies have emergency contingencies in place for situations just like this one. There is no SES, there are no Search and Rescue helicopters, and there is no flying doctor service. If an emergency arises, it will ultimately be up to the trekking companies to respond. While my heart goes out to the families of this man, bear a thought for the situation the trekking leaders would have found themselves in. Firstly depending on where he collapsed, there would have been little or no signal for the sat phone, which meant a runner would have had to be dispatched with the phone to try and get a signal to call for help. Any aircraft would have had to have been dispatched from Port Moresby, at least an hour if not more away from Denaki. Then they would have had to get him to a site where a helicopter could land and pick him up, weather permitting. Unless a doctor could be dispatched with the helicopter, the nearest hospital is at Kokoda, which is only run by a nurse. I can only imagine what they must be feeling now, and know they would have done everything in their power to save him, but even with all their prior planning and experience, the unthinkable has still happened.
I have not posted this to scare would be trekkers, simply to enforce to all that the registered trekking companies are fully aware of how arduous and inaccessible the track is and all have contiguity’s in place in case of an emergency, but incidents such as this are a all too real possibility. To attempt to trek this track, without an experienced trek leader, without some sort of communication device, and a base in Port Moresby to be in constant contact with in case of emergency, and without an emergency plan in place, if an incident does occur, would in my mind, be very foolish and inconsiderate. Please remember that Kokoda is the trekking companies domain, they have, in conjunction with the Kokoda Track Authority spent a considerable amount of time, money and effort in putting safety procedures in place to protect all trekkers and to keep Kokoda relatively safe. I can say for absolute certain there is no other place in PNG where a sole expat female could walk with only local escorts for 7 days without fear of being attacked. It is expensive to trek Kokoda, and the trekking companies no matter how passionate they are about Kokoda, ultimately are a business and are there to make a living. I can fully understand when people are told how much it will cost them, to decide to trek themselves to try and save money, however what price do you put on safety? To the family and friends of the man who died, my deepest sympathies, it is no consolation to you I know, but be comforted by the knowledge that there are many spirits of brave men up there, he is in good company.

Hiring Own Guide

Hi everyone,
I'm heading over to PNG in August this year and with a friend plan on hiking Kokoda, travelling by plane to Lae and then by boat to Rabaul where we will start our medical elective in Nonga Base Hospital for six weeks.
I have a question regarding hiking Kokoda. Most information i have found thus far regards joining an organized group. This is all well and good except we are on a strict budget and the thousands of dollars quoted is most probably too much.
So. Is it possible to hire a guide at Owens Corner for the duration of the trip? If so how much is the going rate for 6nights?
Myself and my friend are quite experienced hikers, Victorian High Country, etc. The main issue is regarding route finding.
So has anyone got any pointers?

Cheers,
Jonno

Future Trekkers? Emergency Dental Work Needed

Attention any future Kokoda Track trekkers who are capable of performing emergency dental work.
As at 21 March 2008, Kokoda resident (Sylvester Barai), who is the aging father of my personal porter, is suffering from poor dental health and is in pain. He is no longer able to chew anything hard and is therefore quite restricted in what he can eat.

This request is to any future trekker visiting Kokoda who may be able to assist in generously providing their expertise to these exceptionally poor big-hearted people. I can only hope that someone with sufficent prior warning, might be able to take adequate kit with them to provide some relief or service to Sylvester. In some cases, an ounce of planning can be worth a tonne of results.

Even if you are not a dentist, don't automatically exclude yourself from the helper list. These people all along the track, have nothing, so any help will be enormously appreciated. It could be the case that a doctor, ADF medic, nurse or even vet may be able to acquire sufficient skills in advance of their visit, to perform emergency dental work - or any medical help for that matter.

Kokoda has a hospital, but more in name than in practice. That is, no doctors, no medicines etc. So any skills & medicine that Aussies have, is widely considered premium by the PNG locals.

Can You Help?
If you are able to help, feel free to pop me an email at dtowler@tpg.com.au and I'd happily tell you everything I know or even liaise with the Barai family (in Kokoda) for you to get any info you need in advance of a visit.

On a practical note - if the work were to take a day or two (just say - I wouldn't know) then the Barai family would provide you with food and accomodation in their family block of land, which houses their group of huts. This is very near Rustie's block. You would be assured of VIP treatment.

I suppose it would be wise to fly from POM to Kokoda a day or two early - before your trek starts south-bound. Whilst I haven't approached Gail regarding this, I suspect she would be happy to arrange this early flight if it could fit in with existing KTL schedules. The flight cost is included in the KTL package - so we'd just be requesting bringing the flight forward a day or two with another KTL trekking group. All subject to Gail's Ok.

Thanks in advance
Dan
dtowler@tpg.com.au

This may sound like a bit of a silly question, but do I need to take a tent on the trek?

I have read many of the postings and there is a lot of talk about type of tents to take, etc. As such, I thought taking a tent was a given.

However, I asked my tour operators if we needed a tent and they advised me that there will be plenty of accommodation available when I do the trek in March so I dont need to take a tent.

Is this the case? Is there plenty of accommodation? Do I need to take a tent?

I have a few mates going and at this stage, based on the tour operators advice, none of us have tents.

What to do????

The below was in this morning Herald Sun

VILLAGERS felled a tree across Papua New Guinea's historic Kokoda Trail, where Australian soldiers fought Japanese troops in 1942, declaring trekking tourists unwelcome.

Village spokesman Barney Jack said about 1000 villagers are demanding the PNG Government allow the Australian company Frontier Resources to dig up 600m of the track to mine a $6.7 billion copper and gold deposit.

The villagers have been offered five per cent in the mine, which could deliver them more than $110 billion over the proposed 10-year life of the project.

But the Australian Government is pressuring the PNG government not to allow the track to be disturbed.

PNG officials expect that up to 6000 trekkers, most of them Australians, will want to travel to PNG after the 2008 trekking season opens early next month.

The blockage has been set up near Naoro village - a cluster of 40 hilltop huts about 55km north-east of the PNG capital Port Moresby.

I was planning on booking this week for a September departure

Few Thoughts Having Done It

hi thought I would put a few thoughts down since I've done it.

1. it was hard. We did in 5.5 days from Owen's Corner to Port Morsbey. Some days I was walking from 6.30 to 6. All up and all down. To prepare I did a lot of stair work. Up and down for an hour. I built it up over 6 months. If I was fair dinkum I would have spent a day or two walking up and down the stairs with a pack with a break for lunch. Train early, do a lot of stairs, build it up over time. Also go for some long walks eg all day, camp then all day.

2. get a porter unless you are a nutter. Great way to get to know the people, and it is hard enough without it.

3. Chuck our half the stuff you have packed. You don't need it. Everyone else will have it. Keep your pack light (especially if you don't have a porter).

4. Long gaiters are useless. Short ones are optional.

5. Pt Moresby is a dangerous s*ithole. If you wander out alone you will probably end up naked and penniless at best. Walk around in groups. Don't be a tourist.

6. The beer is crap (SP).

7. There are a lot of bees and wasps. I didn't expect this.

8. It is very humid. try and spend a day or so getting used to it before you start. Take a spare pair of shoelaces. Mine rotted.

9. My biggest tip is to go at your own pace. On the first day everyone goes nuts, trying to show everyone how fit they are. Forget it. Slow and steady wins this one. On my trek people went fast the first day and ended up spewing with heat exhauston at the end of it.

10. Two people were killed the week I was there. One slipped (local) and died on a rock. One got hacked to death in a fight (local). There is no law. I felt safe though so don't let this put you off.

11. Wear skins. They are lifesavers.

Generally, highly recommended. This tour mob is good, although you need to take your own physical preparation very seriously. Start a year out, and do stair work once a week for a start. Increase the number of stairs each week as "up and down" fitness is very different to say running fitness (or walking).

I can't believe I've done it now. Really pleased I did. Certainly achievable, and safe enough.

Anyway, thought I would share that with you.

I am just posting to thank Gail for providing the logistics needed to make the trek so safe, memorable and enjoyable.

A big thank you to all the KTL boys who not only provided amazing support and assistance, but also became my friends. You are all amazing guys and should be proud of yourselves for performing your jobs so efficiently and affably.

I, and a couple of my trekker-mates, were fortunate enough to be invited into your homes and to meet your loved ones and that personal touch made the trek so much more valuable. On returning home I have told everyone how amazing you boys all are, how strong and capable and also how friendly you are. Thank you so much for everything; your company was enjoyable.

I read the post regarding the troubles in the Oro province and other areas with distress and hope that my Papuan friends and family are all safe. I will send on the items and pictures discussed with you before I left so keep an eye on the mail boys.

Let it flow.

Galen.

Photographs: Galen at Bomana War Cemetery and on the track with other trekkers from Trek 354.

I'm Baaaaack! & Survived As Well!

Hey all,
Well, I am back and have to tell you it's the hardest thing I have ever done in my life, but was the most self satisfying thing I can ever remember. I don’t think anything can prepare you for the constant climb, however I found coming down worse on my knees, I will elaborate a little later when I have more time, however the reason for this post is to warn any of you who might be leaving soon that Air Nugini is in a complete state of disarray, it was always a dubious airline, with constant off loading, but now they seem to have slipped so far into the mire, I am not sure how they will drag themselves out. Suffice to say, if you are flying from Brisbane, and have connecting flights, make sure you leave yourselves a day’s grace, don’t think that if you are booked on a 6.40am flight out of Port Moresby, that you will make a connecting flight that day, we left at 4.30am to catch a 6.40am flight to Australia, which was confirmed at 10pm the night previously that it was on time, only to get there and find that it was delayed to 9.45am, then 10.25am and we finally took off at 11.25am, there are no facilities at the international airport for a cup of coffee, and the toilets at the terminal leave a lot to be desired, until you get through to the departure lounge itself. If you are flying anywhere else in PNG, then good luck, we flew to Goroka, a 9.15am flight was double booked, we ended up leaving at 4.45pm that afternoon, and we were lucky to get on that one. Getting back was even more exciting, we got there at 8.00am to book in for a 10.45am flight, which we ended up leaving at 11.45am, that wasn’t too bad, there were a group trying to get to a conference in Moresby, and had been trying to get out for 3 days! We got on because of our flight to Australia, apparently that gave us priority. The group we were with also had a 6.40am flight, which was changed to 8.20am, 8 of them managed to get on the original flight, some got on a flight to Cairns and then had to find connecting flights out and some got on the afternoon flight out, but had to overnight in Brisbane and get connecting flights next day. One poor lady on our flight was supposed to connect to Perth, she couldn’t book in because they couldn’t find her another flight to Perth, then she finally got on the plane, she arrived in Brisbane but her back pack didn’t! All part of the Adventure I suppose, I can’t even begin to try and describe how saddened I am that such a beautiful country has slid so far downhill. All in all though, I would do it all again in a heart beat,
More later……………………..

Kokoda The Movie

I just wanted to let people know a new feature film ?KOKODA? will be in Australian cinemas from late April. It tells the story of a unit from the 39th battalion cut off from supply outside of Isurava during the battle. Thought some of you may be interested in seeing it. More information can be found at www.kokodathemovie.com.au

Youngest Female To Walk The Track

Hello all,

Firstly let me say what a wonderful website. Very informative.

I have completed 6 Kokoda Treks now and just love it.

I wanted to tell everyone that in August of this year 2005, I took my daughter Alyssa Azar across the track. She is 8 years old and from Australia.

She walked every step of the way herself and carried a Camel Back whilst I carried all of her supplies.

I have posted some photo's in the photo gallery section.

Here's a link to a few others:

Alyssa's Kokoda Trek

Have fun on your trek and remember that anyone can do this if they really want to, and if they prepare properly.

Cheers,

 Razor
