Accommodation Rip-off

Looking forward to my trek in July and everything paid for except accommodation. Has anyone found a way around the
scandalous hotel room rates ? Even with the Kokoda Trekking discount, the cheapest rate so far is between $250 and $300
per night. Nothing is going to spoil this experience for me, but getting ripped off like this will leave a sour taste in the mouth.

Counting down the days,

DARWIN BOY

Hi All,

My friend and I are doing Kokoda in January next year (trek 617). Thought I’d take this opportunity to introduce myself (hi!) and start a thread where I could ask all the questions I have (there are a lot – won’t ask them all at once!). Then when people get bored of me they can always stop reading!

January in PNG – wet season? Does this mean it rains all the time, or should we expect torrential downpours for just a few hours a day? Should I expect to be wet the entire time? Is it hot? I can live with wet, but less happy about being cold!

Cheers,
Kim

Kokoda Battles Historical Poetry By Mike Mcarthur

G'day All,
Like all that have the honour to walk the Kokoda Track I was deeply affected. I am disappointed that so many Australians are still not aware of the courage, sacrafice, mateship and endurance that occurred over there. I have written a series of poems in an effort to help people learn some of the history with out the need to read a large in depth historical book. Who knows maybe one day i will get them published? Any way i thought to day which is the anniversary of the beginning of the battle of Isurava i would share one with you .
regards Mike

THE BATTLE OF ISURAVA- AUSTRALIAS AGINCOURT.

In 1942 there was a life and death struggle,
Against the Japanese in the New Guinea jungle.
The invaders landed with a force 2000 strong,
Encountered only 110 Aussies, to take them on.

By 13th August now 500 defenders at Deniki,
Severely outnumbered by the swarming enemy.
After a full day of fighting there were nearly cut off,
So they had to withdraw or all lives would be lost.

Retreat to the next village, about 2 hours back,
Isurava that sat astride the Kokoda Track.
C.O. Colonel Ralph Honner after a good look around,
Concluded, the best delaying position to be found.

A natural stronghold perched above the valley below,
To the front and to the rear tributary creeks flowed.
Provided obstacles to slow, no were to hide.
A belt of thick scrub but cleared spaces each side.

To outflank on the right, a stiff uphill climb,
Through thick jungle left side, to pass the line.
Dug in north-south between the two creeks,
For 500 metres and 400 metres west–east.

Defenders spread to protect the perimeter,
Close enough for their fire to interlock each other.
This way everyone supported the man next to him,
Each section, platoon, company did the same thing.

Practiced manoeuvres so reserves new what to do,
If the storming Japanese managed to break through.
Over the ensuing days Honner further drilled the men,
How to predict flanking movements, be waiting for them.

Although physically exhausted from weeks of fighting,
After practice and practice, confidence was rising.
The message from Moresby, the AIF are on their way,
No give in, fight till the death, here they must stay.

No more retreat for these brave Militia Men,
Hold this ground, reinforcements are coming.
So while the 39th Battalion prepared Isurava for attack,
The 2/14th were making their way over the track.

The hit and run tactics used by the Aussies to date,
Confused the enemy leaders made them hesitate.
They were amazed at the resistance there’d been,
The defenders only boys by the bodies they’d seen.

They were not aware only 400 faced them,
Thinking 2 thousand were now waiting dug in.
If their commander Major General Horii only knew,
He’d have ordered his army to keep pushing through.

Keep pressure on the defenders, give them no time,
To fortify positions and prepare a protective line.
This hesitation could well have changed history,
If they’d of quickly pursued it is difficult to see.

How the small band of exhausted Australian men,
Could have held for long against the might of them.
But for nearly two weeks the Japanese regrouped,
Now 5 battalions massed, 6 thousand crack troops.

On the morning of 26th August the assault begun,
The booming sound of the Japanese mountain gun.
Rolling along the ridge top near the most forward post,
Entrenched out there to warn of the enemies approach.

As the gunfire continued and intensified that day,
It was clear to all the battle was under way.
But there was no panic waiting for the enemy,
The preparations, as thorough as they could be.

The huge mountain gun caused havoc that day,
Round after round from 500 yards away.
In the distance a load whump noise, 5 seconds to wait,
Huddle in the foxhole, life in the hands of fate.

The gun was disassembled and carried by teams,
The barrel took three men, it weighed 94 kilograms,
The myriad of parts were placed into rucksacks,
Dozens of troops struggled with them over the track.

The 39th possessed an obsolete Lewis Machine Gun,
First seen action on the Western Front in World War 1.
No long range artillery to counter the Japanese,
Have to wait until they got closer to inflict damage.

At the forward patrol post Lieutenant Simonson,
Lead a counter attack to silence the gun.
But it was well protected, by soldiers dug in,
So he and his gallant men had to fall back again.

As the missiles continued to rain in causing hell,
The infantry started pressing the perimeter as well.
To the North side way up on the high ground,
And launching flanking movements around.

The human waves of attacks pressed all afternoon,
Impossible to hold on, if help doesn’t come soon.
Physically exhausted and ammunition getting low,
Any breach of the perimeter would be a fatal blow.

On the high ground were they copped the most heat,
B Company held on by the skin of their teeth.
All reserves committed, hold on they must do,
Nobody behind them but three officers at H.Q.

Although Brigadier Potts new his men had fought well,
As he assessed the grim situation he could tell.
This brave band of men could not survive the night,
They’d be overrun and wiped out before the day light.

Miraculously that evening around 5pm,
The reinforcements arrived, a fine body of men.
C company of the 2/14th all strong, fit and tall,
The confidence they showed obvious to all.

When the two groups laid eyes on each other,
They stared momentarily in wonder.
The newcomers looked at the men to be relieved,
The state they were in was hard to believe.

Men dressed in uniforms that were in shreds,
Raggedy scarecrows, eyes sunken into their heads.
Smelt like latrines that had been left in the sun,
Not bathed for weeks, since the campaign begun.

Bodies racked with dysentery and fatigue,
Lucky they had arrived in time it seemed.
It was hard to believe they could hold a gun,
They’d done an incredible job every one.

Now relieved the 39th were due to fall back,
They’d done their bit to protect the track.
But the situation was dire it was clear,
Every man available was needed here.

The 2/14th were like gods to the militia men,
Bronzed muscular bodies, twice the size of them.
Dressed in green, well equipped and ready to fight,
They would learn jungle warfare that first night.

Recently returned from fighting in the Middle East,
There you could see your enemy at least.
Here the fire fights were over a short distance,
The enemy could creep in close to the defence.

Dark in the jungle, couldn’t see a bloody thing,
Very seldom could the enemy be seen coming.
Had to stay alert because skilled enemy fighters,
Would infiltrate positions and bayonet defenders.

On the 27th hell was unleashed by the enemy,
At 1st light the full power of their artillery.
Mountain gun shells, mortar bombs rained down,
Heavy machine gun fire levelled the tall grass all round.

Just a prelude to what next was in store,
Troops stormed from the jungle, waves of 100 or more.
Rushed the perimeter on the north and west sides,
These most vulnerable positions held back the tide.

The Aussies responded to these frontal attacks,
Hand grenades and storms of fire turned them back.
When due to weight of numbers they reached the lines,
Met with bayonets and hand to hand struggles at times.

Often threatening to over run the thin line,
But desperate fighting repulsed them each time
The probing Japs found a weakness mid afternoon,
Between B Company and D company 16th Platoon.

The jungle was so dense only a limited view,
The enemy was on them before they new.
With overwhelming numbers they breached the line,
A highly dangerous situation for sure this time.

Fresh troops mounted a counter attack,
Expelled the enemy, the line was back intact.
The wave attacks continued through the day,
Near the front lines a thick cover of bodies lay.

In the distance Major General Horri watched,
As attack after attack was squashed.
Three days in this battle had come at great cost,
With 1000 wounded and 350 lives lost.

Getting impatient tomorrow must be the day,
Called up his reserve battalions to enter the fray
This massive frenzied human tide,
Again attacked the North and West sides.

C Company’s position to the front right,
Took heavy casualties in the relentless fire fight.
Attacks so ferocious threatening to break through,
Coming forward the reserves were mauled too.

Sensing victory attacked at this weakened spot,
The perimeter in jeopardy, they must be stopped.
Just as another Banzai attack had began,
Private Bruce Kingsbury ran straight at them.

Mowing them down as he fired his Bren gun,
Stopped the advance, caused them to run.
This brave action had turned the tide,
As other diggers joined in by his side.

Tragically after the enemy had fled,
A snipper shot Brave Kingsbury dead.
He was awarded a posthumously a V.C.
For his actions of unselfish gallantry.

Despite Kingsbury’s sacrifice to stop the breach here,
As the Japanese assaults continued it became clear.
Shear weight of numbers meant only one outcome.
The Australians must withdraw or be overrun.

Chaos and mayhem each time they broke the line,
Expelled over and over, more difficult each time.
When the gallant C Company lost the high ground,
Meant the enemy could rack machine gun fire down.

Also some enemy moved along an alternate track,
Near Missima the 2/16th made frontal contact.
Sent by Horri to attack Alola and secure it,
Cut of Isurava there will be no exit.

So after 4 days of constant fighting and strain,
With no shelter, soaked by the torrential rain,
Not even hot cuppa or meals to eat,
Standing to all the time, deprived of sleep.

The evening of the 29th the order came to fall back,
To a place one hour walk on the track.
This withdrawal must be done the right way,
To keep the pursuing enemy at bay.

It was carried out with much skill and precision,
A battalion go back, dig in a defensive position.
Allow the others to move safely through them,
Leap frog each other and do the same again.

The Australians were not aware as they went,
The cost to the Japanese this battle had meant.
Lost two thousand troops to death and wounding,
And held up four vital days in their track crossing.

The momentum of the Japanese drive was in tatters,
Horii’s ambitious ten day time table shattered,
Weeks of continued stubborn resistance on the track,
Would eventually cause his men to turn back.

If the defence at Isurava had been over run,
It may have been a completely altered out come.
Over the ranges could march the enemy.
Unimpeded all the way to Port Moresby.

Australia could suffer heavy aerial bombarding,
And a real possibility of the Japanese invading.
Against the overwhelming odds the diggers had fought,
This battle is now considered Australia’s Agincourt.

Solo Female

Hi Everyone,

I'm going to be embarking on my first Kokoda trek in August (only 3 weeks away!) and I only just stumbled onto this forum a few days ago. I'm kicking myself I didn't find this sooner, however I have read almost every discussion and found the advice invaluable!

I was originally supposed to be going with my older brother but two weeks ago he had to undergo ACL surgery on his knee and as such, cannot go with me anymore. I'm a 27 year old female and considered pulling out as well, but I had been planning and looking forward to this for over a year, I had already paid for the trek in full and gotten time off work - so I decided to go ahead and "Just Do It" as they say.

One advantage I suppose I do have, is that I was born and raised in Lae, and although I've lived in Australia since I was 10, my family still lives in Lae and Moresby and I go back at least twice a year to visit. So, I'm no stranger to PNG, I know what to expect regarding the people, weather, crime, etc etc. So at least I won't have to worry about the "cultural shock" that some people experience.

Despite this, I'm still very nervous about Kokoda. I was wondering if there are any other females out there who have done Kokoda solo? I have booked with what I believe to be a reputable trekking company (but not KTL) and I have complete faith in them. I guess my concern is how I will be able to cope without a friend or family member to lean on, both physically and emotionally. Any advice or personal experiences would be most helpful!

Jan

Hope I am in the right place. Three of us are planning to join a trek and were wondering if the local guides tell of the history of Kokoda and point out various places and what took place there, whilst on the trek or is it up to oneself for any historical facts, etc.

Hi all,
I completed the trek in July this year and have not yet been able to get the elation out of my system.
All I seem to do is dream about getting back to those mountains and to those beautiful people. Next time spending more time to absorb the beauty of the country and learn more history along the way. However to find one that has the same love and interest is proving to be a bit of a mean feat. So I thought maybe I would leave a message to all that would like to chat about past experiences or up and coming ones in the hope to meet people of the like and aspire to repeat the trek in the future.

Hi there,

I'm new to both forums and trekking... so go easy on me too. I have booked a Kokoda trek for June 09. I'm a 47 year old female traveling without my husband ( who isn't' the least bit interested in trekking Kokoda). I live 'out the back o Bourke.... so no hills for training and no gym.

At present I run 10km 4 times a week but plan to add step aerobics in soon to strengthen my legs. Any other ideas would be helpful.

Also , how much water should I carry? reading all the different Kokoda companies info - some recommend 2 litres, some 3. Is fresh drinking water readily available on the track? should I ALWAYS use purification tablets? that's it for now. Looking forward to any tips you may have to offer on anything relevant. I'm all ears.

Hi Everyone,

I have been reading the Form regularly for the last few months and joined now as I have booked to do the trek next June (09).

There are 3 of us in the 45 - 55yrs range and we have been training for the last few months. It is encouraging to read all your comments that age in no barrier provided you prepare mentally and physically.

On the physical training, I have been doing regular cross country walks with a GPS, averaging about 15km each and carrying a pack. Generally these take about 5 hrs and involve some climbing but nothing like Kokoda. I see a lot of people recommend stair work but as rural folk, we are short of high buildings. As a substitute I have been doing some cycling work which is good for legs and stamina.

I guess as you start to prepare seriously, the doubts also start to appear as you hear stories of people being air lifted out from the trail due to lack of preparation.
If anyone wants to comment it would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there.

We've recently acquired a heap of New Guinea WWII toppo maps, and this has had the happy effect of rekindling my dormant desire to do the Track.

I have some questions about equipment and food, which I hope some old hands can provide some guidance on...

1. Accommodation - I understand that in some camp areas there is not a tree to be found.

2. I understand that porters generally carry food and cooking gear, but I do like to brew up whenever I can. Gas canisters are obviously hens teeth in PM, but can I bring in my own solid fuel (similar to hexamine blocks) to last a few days worth of brews?

3. Rations - I do not know if I wil go with a group like Kokoda Trekking or not, but in the event that I don't, does PNG have any strange AQIS-type laws that would prohibit me from bringing my own dehyd food?

Cheers

Hi...

A group of us - (female) 50 + - are intending to do the track April 2009... We are a group with a varying range of trekking experience - I am possibly the least experienced - but have recently had my first ever trekking, camping, tenting, widerness experience in Tasmania (Walls of Jerusalem/Cradle Mountain) and absolutely loved it.... The mental challenges were more difficult than the physical which suprised me as I was far more worried about the physical. I realise that the Kokoda is a completely different and more difficult trek.

I have been looking at the great photo gallery available on this site which has inspired and scared me at the same time.

Basically, I am scared but up for the challenge and just wonder if there is anyone else out there who felt the same - and would like to know what their experience was like.

The Amazing Kokoda Trail

Again the kokoda trail. I live in the Netherlands, very far from most ot he people who walked the kokoda trail. I lived from 1969-1972 in Port Moresby working for a department and a mining company. In 1970 the red cross organized one of the first big trips to walk from kokoda to port moresby, a distance of about 150-160 km
I was in that time 24 years old and spend in that time nearly every weekend to do parts of the kokoda trek, Flying with a pilatus porter or a DC3 to one of the small airfields and walk then back to owens corner in 2 or days
Have a look at my website kokoda 2002: http://www.nicohuijbers.nl/kokoda/index.htm

G'day all
recently discovered the forum and have been enjoying reading the stories.
I'm 48 and had the honour of walking the track in july 2007 from kokoda to owers corner via naduli.
i had an absolutely dream trek with no rain at all until day 8 when we finally topped imita ridge and soon discovered how difficult it is in muddy conditions.
i feel a bit guilty because a mate went in april 2007 and had a typically wet walk. i must admit
some of the "horror stories" he told me certainly made me train harder before i left. but
overall i was very happy with my preperation, no blisters and although it was every bit as tough as i expected, i was able to dig deep and find in myself what it takes to complete the journey of my life time.
I still can't stop thinking about and talking about the track. every body in my life can not understand that once you have been there you are changed for ever (am i the only one who feels this way)
i am hopeing to go back again maybe in 2010 for anzac day at isurava memorial
how good does that sound!!
any way am pleased to have found the forum and hope to have some positve input
if i can
cheers mikmac

The Temperature, Humidity, And Other Musings.

Hey all, just signed up for trek 408 in mid April and have a few questions which may be a little different, so please bear with me.

I'm one of those people who cannot stand the cold. I live in FNQ and my thick woolen jumper does not come off until it's passed 20 degrees C, so I'm more concerned by the cold at altitude than anything else about the trek. As most people are aware 35 degrees at 5% humidity is a lot diffrerent to 35 degress at 99% humidity. I'm used to the latter, and when I visited Melbourne a year ago they were having their 35 degree days (about 5 in a row), all the while I remained with a light jumper on. People were looking at me like I was some sort of weirdo.

So, my obvious question is "Will I need a jumper and fleecy pants for the evenings?". I'm leaning towards a big "Yes" atm. My other option would be to bring along a survival blanket as they're pretty light. This might sound extreme, but I don't want my trek stuffed by being half frozen.

On to another quiz... How much does a group have to stay together? Are we completely bound by the guide, or can we wander a bit and explore? I've chosen a slightly longer trek in the hope that I am able to wander a touch. OK, maybe a bit more than a touch. I'm happy to do the 10 to 12 hour hikes as they would on a 6 day trek, but taking the 9 day one I think will let me take a few more things in rather than just slog it out each day.

In this regard would I need to bring a cane knife or machete? Or could I buy a half decent one in png if I needed one?

Next question relates to fishing after the trek. I've heard a lot about the New Guinea Black Bass and am keen to trot off somewhere after the trek and spend a couple of days fishing for these notorious brutes. Anybody done this, or know of a good location not too far from base?

Looking forward to a few answers if anybody cares to.

Hi,
I'm wondering whether I need a personal porter for a trek in July. I'm 18 and fairly recently dislocated my knee but recovered immediately. I am an amateur trekker but have hiked for up ten days. It is recommended that a personal porter is hired by everyone who is not ‘super-fit’, and while I am fit I don’t want to be too confident and regret not hiring a personal porter mid-way.

On that note, what does the personal porter carry? because i have no intention of walking the trail with only a day pack!
Thanks

Training And Preparation Around Melbourne

Hi all,

My dad and I are looking to do Kokoda in August this year. He's in Brisbane and has people he can train with. I'm in the northern suburbs of Melbourne and have no idea where to find a group or person to train with.

We're hoping to be sponsored for the trip and raise money for a couple of charities, so I want to keep my training and associated costs to a minimum.

I'm studying to become a personal trainer at the moment and know all the 'gym' exercises I'll need to do for strength, endurance and core training. (Ironically, I don't have the time or money to spend on a gym membership, unless I find someone to 'donate' that as well.) I'd like suggestions or advice on good places in our around Melbourne to endurance train (hike/walk with packs etc), apart from the standard tourist stuff on visitvictoria.com.au, which I could do alone if necessary, and if there are groups who do 'organised' training.

Thanks in advance.
Eve

What Age Is Too Young?

Hi Everyone,
I have been reading these forums since I decided to do the trek almost 18 months ago. The information from so many experienced people has been great, takes most of the guess work out of it. Thus my reason for this post, as I don't think the question has been asked before. I booked with a trekking company about 6 mths ago through a travel agent. The agency is organising a group trek of 16 people, the only person I know in the group is the mate that I'm going with. When talking to the agency today to ask a few questions and finalise the deposit we were told that a member of the group will be 5 years old.
I'm a bit blown away, as a five year old child would be the last person I would have considered being included in the trip. Now before I am accused of being ageist I should say that I am the father of a 3 and 4 year old and my mate the father of 3. So I don't have a problem with kids but I do have a few concerns with what I consider a bit young for such a trek, these include:
- The childs ability to actually complete the trek
- Their health & welfare during the trek
- The ability for a five year old to actually comprehend what they are about to do (walk hard for 9 days)
- The impact that such a decision can make upon the other members of the group.
I'm probably venting my spleen a little at the moment as I only found out about this this afternoon. So rather than asking myself all these questions I thought I'd ask the experts. Your opinions would be appreciated, thanks.
P.S. I'm booked for Anzac Day '08

Some time ago we purchased a Cessna 206 from Missionary Aviation Fellowship (commonly referred to as MAF) to help out with our food drops and any other use we can think of to help our trekking business.

Quite a few obstacles were put in our path but finally the aircraft is finished and ready to fly. All relevant engineering work was just completed which included the installation of a newly overhauled propellor with some 1500 hours to run and an inspection to certify its ready to GO!

All we are waiting on now is for our Australian pilot to obtain his visa in Brisbane as his work permit was approved earlier this month. Once he arrives we will begin servicing local ports which will include Efogi/Kagi/Naduri and Kokoda. Our pilot has been employed here in PNG for quite a number of years and is already endorsed around with lots of PNG time.

Photograph: P2 - MDC parked near the Hevi Lift departure area.
Hi
Just wondering if I am perhaps a little long in the tooth to do it, I am a healthy but slightly overweight 69 year old and very much would like to spend my 70th birthday, September 2008, on the track.

In my younger days was a real keen bushwalker although of late have not been as active, with the possibility of walking the track I have been spending 1-2hours 5 days a week for the past month or so on the cardio gear at my local gym, am a little over weight but that is coming down.

My GP has not said yes or no yet but has inidicated that if I get my weight down he felt that he would give me the okay.

Whilst from the research I have done I can see that it would certainly not be a picnic but quite a challenge, I would be a fool at 70 not to use a porter I know it is hard my main concern at present, there are a few minor other ones, is the creek/river crossing "Walking the Plank" have heard some many stories although from what I have found that Porters will supply a lot of assistance whilst crossing.

Wonder if there are any other more mature trekers who have done the track and can advise me if I am perhaps dreaming?

Look forward to any replies not only from the more mature but you younger fellas also.

Brian

Camping Hammock

Hi all,
I'm new here and researching for a possible trip to PNG in the future, I have done a little bit of walking in the past. I live in North Queensland on the coast, so I dont think the humidity will be such a problem as it is for some, but I am a bit concerned about the cold.
Has anyone used a hammock on the Kokoda Track, or in other cooler areas? What sort of hammock did you use and are the camping areas suitable for using a hammock or are they too cleared? Or does it get to cold for a lightweight hammock?
Have'nt got a set date yet so open to suggestions on the time of year to go, although winter/spring is probably not an option with my work.
I am thinking January-February would suit me the best and it should be the warmest. What sort of overnight temps could I expect in those months up in the ranges?
I have walked Hinchinbrook Island a couple of times and would class it as easy-medium. Has anyone here done the Thorsborne Trail? And how would you rate the difficulty level of it?
I will be using a digital SLR and taking max size jpegs. Any suggestions on lens choice and amount of storage I may need.
Thanks, Phil

Newbie Thinking About Trekking Kokoda

Hi, I'm new (obviously) and I am autistic with some co-existing disorders

I am on several medications and was wondering if anyone could tell me if I will have a problem getting these medications through customs in Papua New Guinea. The medications I am on are:

Dexamphetamine (5mg) - 4 tablets daily - this is my main concern

Catapres (Clonidine) for sleep disorders - 3 tablets daily
Prozac (anti-depressant) - 2 tablets daily
Asthma inhalers (Ventolin & Seretide) - taken when needed
Buscopan (anti-spasmodic for stomach cramping) - 2 tablets daily

I am not looking at trekking for at least 12 months to allow for financial saving, but would really like to find out this information well in advance. Thank you for your help.

fluppy

Countdown To Kokoda

G'day,
Six of us are walking the track on the 10th of October. I have spent the last couple of hours reading through the forum and have really enjoyed the experience. I thought I had covered pretty much everything on the equipment list but have really had my eyes opened. The boot tying link was great and I am going to try it out tomorrow.
I am really looking forward to the experience and it is great to read the feedback from other trekkers who have already completed the track. One of our team members Bear Clements has already walked kokoda last year and he is chafing at the bit to do it again. The oldest member of oure group is 57 and the youngest is 24...not a bad age spread. We all work and live on Hamilton Island on the Great Barrier Reef North Queensland.
The DVD and Field giude to the Kokoda Trak by Bill James supplied by Kokoda Trekking is great and I will be taking the book on the Trek It gives a great insight to the history of PNG in that area and time. I am shocked at the lack of exposure the Kokoda track has in our education system and was appalled at my own lack of knowledge about the Kokoda campaign. I hope to do the trek more than once and also try some of the other trek options in PNG. Amazing a place on your doorstep and most of us know so little about. Well that is about to change we are all very excited and are counting the days.
I have a question if anyone can help me out. I really don't like caps and am going to take my Akubra would anyone advise for or against regarding type of head gear?

Xane

We're Back And We Made It!

After attempting the trek in 2006 and my husband being airlifted off due to illness, we realised this year that Kokoda was 'unfinished business'. We are in our late 40's with 3 grown kids and work fulltime so training was at times, inconvenient. We stuck at it, had a training schedule and having the advantage of spending 3 days on the track last year, we knew what was ahead of us. This year we included a lot of stair training and it really made the difference. We both went with very strong leg muscles and knees, you will struggle if don't work on getting the leg strengh for climbing.

So early August, trek 340 with Kokoda Trekking, we started at Kokoda. By the end of the first day we knew we were going to make it. We were with 6 other trekkers, 5 were our age and 1 was a 22 year old German backpacker who had wanted to see rain forests. He'd seen more than enough by day 4! Thankfully we were all of similar fitness level and once we started in the mornings, we didn't stop until the trek leader rested us for morning tea and lunch. All of us completed the trek with very few problems at all, no sickness, no serious injury and absolutely loved the experience.

Being the only female in our group made no difference at all. I was not the slowest trekker and was not the last to be ready in the mornings!! We had a wonderful trek leader who briefed us each night on the following days schedule, we got the map out and worked out exactly what was ahead of us.

Knowing what to expect keeps you focussed, and at no time did we ever question why we were there. When we finished at Owers Corner, everyone cried including some of the porters and the trek leader David. We sang both the Australian National Anthem and the PNG Anthem 3 times while trekking, at Isurava, Brigade Hill and at Owers. It was very moving for all of us and we were fortunate to have a trek leader with considerable knowledge of the battles fought in 1942.

For anyone thinking of doing the trek, stop thinking and get up and start training. We have been home 3 weeks and Kokoda seems like such a long time ago and I miss everything about it - the people, the challenge and just being there. I now know why people do the trek more than once.

Rather than writing about everything we did, everything we took and what we should have left home, I will check the forum regularly and happy to answer any questions anyone has.

Donna

Track Diary

I am attaching a Track Diary and Track tips that was sent to me by a man who did the Track in 2001. Hope everyone enjoys reading this as much I did, if you are going to print it, it's 38 pages long, so have plenty of paper, but it is 38 pages of good reading and highlights at the end that although the Kokoda Track is one of the main attractions of the New Guinea Tourist Industry, we must not forget that it is someone else's backyard we are trekking through and they are bound to get a little peeved at times with the amount of traffic that is constantly going through and that while the majority of the villages are welcoming, there is that element who will resent the intrusion. I am not sure if it is an exaggeration but I heard that there can be as many as 600+ people/tourists walking the track at any one time. The mind boggles!

Happy Reading

Hi Aussie

I wish to express my admiration of the Kokoda Trekking teams that competed in the Kokoda Challenge, i had the chance to have a bit of a chat with the team at the briefing night especially the young man who had done the actual track in 17 hours (apologies as i cannot recall his name).

These men are a great example of the people of P.N.G always friendly & smiling and they did their country proud in the event against a mixture of teams of professional athletes who were out to set or better previous times (in the region of 12 hours) & teams who wanted to complete the 96 klm as best they could.

For the record the Sci-Fleet Toyota Landcruisers completed the event in 29 hours and 2 minutes only 12 hours behind the P.N.G teams (should ask them to do it twice to give the old blokes a chance).

Regards

Paul

Hi, I am going to Kokoda on the 24th of August, 2007
not with this company ( little embarrased to admit that when I am on your forum!)
and was just wondering what the toilet situation is on the track, not that I am opposed to finding the nearest tree, however having spent the first 21 years of my life in the Highlands and dealing with the locals on a daily basis, am just wondering.
My son (19) and I are joining a trek which has been organised by the 2/16th Battalion, to take my fathers ashes to Kokoda, Bill Guest was a member of the 39th Battalion, then when this was disbanded, he joined the 2/14th, after the war he went back to Moresby and Lae in the PNGVR & PIR, then to Goroka, all up about 32 years, he also went back to Ishuarva for the 60th Anniversary with the Prime Minister, when he died on the 1st of December last year, our family decided to take him back to where he was the happiest. We are doing a 'Kinsman' trek, just from Kokoda to Ishuarva & back. I am so looking forward to going home, although it is going to be such an emotional trip.
Yahoo Serious has been a great help, organising with the Kokoda Foundation for Dad's ashes to be spread, as well as a local lady called Prisila, who comes from Kokoda Village.

hey everyone,

Ill start with a little about me. Im 20, I live in Adelaide where i study a BA International Studies @ the university of south australia, with the ambition to join the army at the end of 2007. Im looking to do a trek mid next year - between uni semesters.

My reason for wanting to do the trek is that im sick of just, studying, going to the gym, working and going out. I hate how this is currently how my life is defined. I guess i want to test myself. I want to get out of Adelaide and experience something totally different than the majority my age do and extremely challenging.

Anyway hope to meet all of you in the forums.

Regards

Simmo

Hi members,

Living and working in Gusap and heading up the highlands in November to visit local villages in the yalibu district (I'll head further south in the highlands next year to visit more friends and their families). I think apart from Mt Wilhelm the mountain i will climb in Yalibu will be a good fitness check prior to doing the Kokoda Trail. People in PNG are truly unique in there wamth and PNG'ism, its great to be in PNG...I'll get to Kokoda before the end of 2007.
All photos will be posted at the following photographic website
http://community.webshots.com/user/rustedguitarman ... some there from the lowland markem and ramu valley's.

Greetings to all and will continue to enjoy reading Kokoda experiences

Mick

I am the author of "A Chronology of Australian Armed Forces At War 1939-45," published by Allen & Unwin in April 2001.
I also have a completed manuscript of the Kokoda Campaign from July 1942 until January 1943.
Following the publication of my book, I applied for grants from various sources to enable me to "Trek the Track". I wanted to see for myself the various battle sites (Isurava, Eora Creek, Brigade Hill, etc.), to add "credibility" to my work.
I also wanted to photograph the various sites, and accurately plot the track with a hand-held GPS.
However, all my applications were unsuccessful.
Now, aged 61, and having undergone treatment for cancer, I do not feel that I could cope with the physical exertion of trekking the Track.
However, I have seen on a web-site that there are day-trips of the Track by helicopter, which lands at the sites I particularly want to see.

Does any member of this forum have any information on these flights - or know from where I can obtain such information.

Cheers,
Bruce T.

Hi there,

I have a lot of questions...hope someone can help me out?

Myself and friend are wanting to do a 9 or so day tour ending on ANZAC day 2006. I have read that the best time to do the Kokoda trail is between June and October, does this mean we will be doing this in the wet season? Is this safe?

Is there a set number of groups that would be going at ANZAC time? There is only the two of us and we are both female and would prefer to do this in a larger group of people. Do we make our own group or can you combine us in with others?
Does this company have public liability insurance?
Does the guide give commentry on war history and stuff along the way?
Can i hire a tent and bed matress from the company or is it best to bring my own?
Which is the best way to do the trek? I have read it is more historically correct to go from Kokoda to POM but it seems like it would be more of an achievment to be walking to Kokoda. Is this choice ours?
Also we would both prefer the challenge to be carrying our own packs, are we being silly?

Hope to hear from someone soon...

Gday everyone, I'm Joakim Siira of Perth, WA.

I got the Kokoda book by Peter Fitzsimons for Christmas last year, and must have read it half a dozen times, I've been bitten by the Kokoda bug. But I guess I can't do it yet, I'm only 14, and I assume the minimum age is 18? Also, would it be possible for a Port Moresby-Buna trek to be set up? I reckon that would be a beaut, covering the entire track, seems fitting to follow the entire way the 39th went in 1942. Haha no doubt harder, but I can't wait to get stuck into it.

Cheers

Introduction

Greetings all - Thank you for this wonderful forum. I am preparing to walk the track as part of a "Return to Isurava" in August. My father was in the 39th battallion and returned to PNG a number of times. He had a great affection for the country and it will be good to see the places he spoke of so often. Relatives of 39th battallion members have been invited to this pilgrimage to Isurava.
Although I lived and worked in PNG (Lae) for 4 years (93-96) I was unable to complete the walk then.
Veterans from the 39th will be flying in to Isurava September 2 and our walk is timed to meet with them there for a memorial service.
So, thanks for this forum as it is so helpful in planning and preparation.
Patrick C.
